LAGOS PREPARATORY SCHOOLS,IKOYI – LAGOS is the venue for December 2007 best Schools / Students seasonal terms awards  of the Nigerian International Schools Chess Championship League

The Nigerian International Schools League has in reality come of age since inception five years ago.

It is important to note that the event is now gaining widespread popularity amongst the international schools and schools that are ready to abide with the ethical conducts of fair play within the Lagos environ and any part of the country,

More schools are beginning to participate and the edition for October 2007- June 2008 has 19 schools participated fully.

We therefore encourage schools and individuals that want to be part of the event, or that want to be part of the fun this young men and women enjoy, to be at the venue of the next league games which will commence on 4th October 2008 in Saint Finbar’s College, Akoka.

Lagos Preparatory School (LPS), at No. 11, Bayo Kuku Street, Ikoyi played host to one of the league games.

The schoo has a perfectly conducive learning environment, as part of their ‘Fun Day’ incorporated this event into their list of activities by accepting to play host, thereby creating a more fun filled atmosphere on the day.

In participation were schools like Atlantic Hall, BIS, Chrisland, Corona, D’Ivie, Dowen, Grange, Holy Child, King’s College, Krystal Ball, Lagooze School, Mount Olivet, Nigerian-Turkish, Queen’s College, T. Grade, and Vivian Fowler.

Though not all these schools were on ground, but the attendance was quite substantial. Some of them came with two teams (Team A&B i.e. Senior and Junior). The senior and junior teams also had teams A&B. Their coaches accompanied each of the school teams. Prominent amongst them are experienced Nigerian masters like Mr. Edunwale King, Mr. Ajibola Olarenwaju, and Mr. Charles Campbell. ‘Jibola Olarenwaju was an invitee to the pre-all African games training camp in Kaduna this year. Also in attendance were some school officials, prominent of which was Mr. Pope (Proprietor of Grange Schools, Ikeja).

The top players of last season (see report on last season’s finals) were on ground to do battle again this season. Just back from the Lagos State Sports Festival (see report) were players like Muomah Irah (silver medal), Mamoud Yusuf (bronze medal), Shadare Tobi, Akinpelu Akintola; all students of King’s College Lagos. The current national Under-14 champion;
Tobi Edunwale was also present. As you may have already figured out, he is son to Coach Edunwale King. Little wonder he’s champion!

Nigerian International Schools Chess Championship League

The 4th year finals of the Nigerian International Schools Chess Championship League took place on Saturday, June 9, 2007 at Chrisland College, Idimu, Lagos.

It was a spectacular event that featured the final chess matches of the league, a tense 12 board simultaneous display, a good meal from our hospitable hosts and awards of laurels for outstanding performances.

Before continuing this story, first some background information is required.

The league has been in existence for 4 years now and it has not missed a month game or a year season. This is no small feat considering the low financial assistances for chess affairs over the years in Nigeria and especially schools chess development.

The concept behind the league is that the intellectual nature of chess is very useful for young children who are still developing there mental capacity  which is necessary to augment their growth with broad chess activity e.g. competing with a wide variety of opponents that the league offers. Chess also teaches the child how to struggle against opposition and succeed, thereby developing his/her character.

Without a doubt, the survival of the league so far is due to the persistent effort of its chief organizer, Mr. Kunle Fasan.

Q C Students
A curious board position with ladies of Queens College. The black side is practically untouched, while white’s queenside looks like something from Morozevich game.

One thing that the games showed was that Nigeria is not short on chess talent and although their opening knowledge could be better, their originality was enviable. Though our favorite player at the event was Grange’s Fakhry Mansour, whose game with a Queens College representative deserves praise and applause.

Fahkry
Fakhry here employs the Sicilian defence, the favorite of chess great, Gary Kasparov.
